Thai Weekday Pairs to Read with a Friend

Thai Weekday Pairs: Reading Friendly and Opposing Stars

Explore Thai friendly and opposing stars through weekday pairs and their traditional numbers. Read the mnemonic verse, then try three questions with a friend.

01

What Star Pairs Are Called in Thai Tradition

01 · Find the star pair, then listen to each other’s story.

Shall we place your friend’s weekday next to yours? Thai astrology has a tradition of grouping celestial bodies in pairs. คู่มิตร means ‘friendship pair’, and คู่ศัตรู means ‘enemy pair’. For stars, the names ดาวคู่มิตร and ดาวคู่ศัตรู are also used. Horasat reads them as ‘friendly stars’ and ‘opposing stars’.

These pair names don’t judge people’s relationships. They offer a lens for self-reflection through traditional Thai symbols, such as a weekday’s celestial body, color, and animal mount. Friendly stars don’t determine how a relationship turns out, and opposing stars don’t mean you should avoid someone. We don’t assign scores or rankings, either.

02

Before the Tables: Numbers for the Eight Stars

The numbers in traditional tables stand for celestial bodies: Sunday’s Sun is 1, Monday’s Moon is 2, Tuesday’s Mars is 3, Wednesday Day’s Mercury is 4, Thursday’s Jupiter is 5, Friday’s Venus is 6, Saturday’s Saturn is 7, and Wednesday Night’s Rahu is 8. A larger number doesn’t mean a stronger or more important star.

Look up Wednesday Day and Wednesday Night separately, as they are distinct categories. In Horasat, the day begins at 6 a.m., and Wednesday Night runs from 6 p.m. on Wednesday until just before 6 a.m. the next day. If you don’t know your birth time, explore the possible categories together. Liking a sentence isn’t a reason to settle on a birth weekday.

Friendly Star Table · คู่มิตร

Sunday and Thursday — Sun and Jupiter, traditional numbers 1 and 5

Monday and Wednesday Day — Moon and Mercury, traditional numbers 2 and 4

Tuesday and Friday — Mars and Venus, traditional numbers 3 and 6

Saturday and Wednesday Night — Saturn and Rahu, traditional numbers 7 and 8

Each pair works in both directions. If Thursday is Sunday’s friendly star, Sunday is also Thursday’s friendly star. These four pairs appear in multiple Thai sources. Keep the fact that the same table has been passed down separate from the claim that it can reveal people’s relationships.

04

Opposing Star Table · คู่ศัตรู

Sunday and Tuesday — Sun and Mars, traditional numbers 1 and 3

Monday and Thursday — Moon and Jupiter, traditional numbers 2 and 5

Wednesday Day and Wednesday Night — Mercury and Rahu, traditional numbers 4 and 8

Friday and Saturday — Venus and Saturn, traditional numbers 6 and 7

These four pairs also have the same arrangement across multiple Thai sources. ‘Opposing’ describes a traditional classification. We don’t turn it into a statement predicting someone’s personality or conflict between two people.

What Does the Verse for Remembering the Pairs Mean?

อาทิตย์ผิดใจกับอังคาร พุธอันธพาลวิวาทกับราหู ศุกร์กับเสาร์นานเนาว์เป็นศัตรู จันทร์กับครูเป็นคู่อริกัน

Its meaning is: ‘The Sun falls out with Mars; unruly Mercury quarrels with Rahu; Venus and Saturn are longstanding enemies; the Moon and the teacher form an enemy pair.’ Here, ครู means ‘teacher’ and refers to Jupiter. This traditional mnemonic verse helps you remember four pairs: Sun–Mars, Mercury–Rahu, Venus–Saturn, and Moon–Jupiter.

The verse’s harsh language belongs to traditional stories about celestial bodies. It isn’t grounds for calling someone born on Wednesday Day unruly, or for saying that people born on Monday and Thursday will quarrel. The tables and verse explain a cultural tradition; the conversation questions below are self-reflection prompts created by Horasat.

06

Opposing Stars Don’t Mean ‘Someone to Avoid’

02 · When you notice different rhythms, ask what each person wants.

If your pair is Friday and Saturday, you can borrow Venus’s sense of taste and Saturn’s steadiness as a starting point for conversation. When choosing a café together, for example, put ‘I’m curious about somewhere new’ beside ‘I’d like to relax somewhere familiar’. Neither answer is assigned to people born on a particular weekday.

Listen to each person’s answer before the star description. You might want somewhere new today and somewhere familiar next time. If you notice different rhythms, ask, ‘How shall we decide this time?’ People with friendly stars can use the same question. The aim is to find a way to spend time together now, rather than label the relationship.

07

Three Questions to Read with a Friend

03 · Choose one question and connect it to your own experiences.

1. When choosing where to meet, would you rather go somewhere new or somewhere familiar today?

2. If a reply will be late, would you ask for a quick heads-up or a longer conversation later?

3. At the end of a hard day, do you need a quiet walk together or someone to sit and listen right now?

Choose just one question and each share a scene it brings to mind. If your answers differ, ask why; if they’re the same, listen to when each person needed that approach. You can skip any question you don’t want to answer. If you don’t yet know your weekday, find it first, then continue the conversation in the view for two.
